ANCHOR LEAD: ONCE AGAIN, CARBOHYDRATES ARE FINGERED AS A MAJOR CULPRIT IN OBESITY, ELIZABETH TRACEY REPORTS

Too many simple carbohydrates such as sugar, corn syrup, white flour and products made from it such as pasta, drive up insulin levels in the blood and stymy weight loss efforts, another study has concluded.  Kerry Stewart, a preventive cardiology researcher at Johns Hopkins, says this corroborates work by his group.

STEWART:While calories are still important it’s not just about calories. In the study we did we put people on the low-carb versus the low-fat diet.  In both groups there was a reduction in calories, so there was no significant difference in the number of calories people ate, but the weight loss was significantly greater in the low-carb group even with the same number of calories.  So that’s pretty good evidence that the type of food makes a difference.  :28
