Anchor lead: Will a big data approach to healthcare cuts costs? Elizabeth Tracey reports

Costs are out of control when it comes to health. Now hope glimmers with inHealth, the Johns Hopkins initiative that aims to integrate big data with personalized medicine. Antony Rosen, inHealth co-director, explains.

Rosen: If you’re able to identify a specific patient who would benefit from a very expensive therapy and seven patients who won’t, then you won’t need to try them on an irrelevant treatment.  :13

Rosen sees the inHealth approach as having much more global impact than simply reducing costs.

Rosen: I see this great democratization of medicine, that what you learn and how you subdivide patients in these clinically relevant buckets can actually be disseminated in a series of measurement tools and data tools that really is going to move medicine throughout the world in a new way.  :17

At Johns Hopkins, I’m Elizabeth Tracey.
