Are brown rice and white rice really that different? Yes, says Johns Hopkins doctor Linda Lee, and that can matter to those with digestive problems.
She says, “If you want your gut to work better, choose whole grains.” Unlike refined carbohydrates like white bread and pasta, whole grain foods supply plenty of fiber, which supports healthy digestion. You also get added nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids.
In addition to easing gas, constipation and other digestive woes, eating whole grains can help your body resist illness.
Lee explains that when gut bacteria break down the fiber in whole grain foods, the resulting molecules support cells lining the colon, where 70 percent of our immune cells live.
