Centers that advertise themselves as focused on women’s health issues may not provide the range of services women who are experiencing menopause may need. Wen Shen, a menopause expert at Johns Hopkins, who’s developed a team-based approach to this stage of life, says when she surveyed existing services they often did not cover menopause in its entirety.
Shen: A lot of the programs for menopausal and postmenopausal women were more focused on women who had breast cancer, also on plastics. So there’s a lot of cosmetic emphasis. We’re more focused on healthy aging. Things that increase a woman’s risk for dying early, not being independent and mobile and thinking straight when she’s eighty, so that’s what we’re focusing on. :32
