Deaths from certain cancers continue to rise, Elizabeth Tracey reports

While overall cancer deaths are continuing their decline, there are three that are still problematic, the most recent data from the American Cancer Society demonstrates. Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center director William Nelson names them.

Nelson: The ones to watch for is the highest numbers of deaths are from lung cancer, colorectal cancer and pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer and liver cancer are slightly on the rise so that's one to really keep an eye on, they're tough cancers to treat at this point there aren't really really good screening and early detection things like there are for cervical cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer. There is another little alarming piece in that one colorectal cancer is on the rise among adults that are under the age of 50.  :30 

Nelson says no one knows why colorectal cancer is increasing in those younger than fifty years of age, but earlier screening is certainly recommended, especially in those with a family history of the disease. He notes that screening may just involve a test you can do at home so there’s no reason to put it off. At Johns Hopkins, I’m Elizabeth Tracey.
