If you get a positive result on the new blood test for Alzheimer’s disease, what does that mean? Elizabeth Tracey reports

Positive results on the newly FDA cleared blood test for Alzheimer’s disease don’t necessarily mean you have the disease. That’s according to blood biomarkers expert Abhay Moghekar, a neurologist at Johns Hopkins.

Moghekar: Whether that's the cause of your cognitive impairment or your dementia needs further assessment by an expert clinician. They need to understand what kind of cognitive deficits there are, could medications be contributing, sleep disorders, mood disorders. So people should not be under the false impression that you can make a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease now that we have an FDA approved test. So we have to be clear that the test has to be interpreted in the context of an overall detailed assessment of cognitive and mood and social function.     :34

Moghekar says no one should even use the new blood test unless they have other symptoms suggestive of Alzheimer’s disease. At Johns Hopkins, I’m Elizabeth Tracey.
