Anchor lead: How can we avoid emergency department visits related to edible cannabis products? Elizabeth Tracey reports

Cookies, brownies, gummies…these types of cannabis products are behind the recent spike in emergency departments visits related to cannabis use. Ryan Vandry, a cannabis researcher at Johns Hopkins, calls for regulation.

Vandry: There needs to be better control over the amount of THC or cannabis in any of these products so if we have a maximum allowed dose in the five to maybe 10 milligram of THC range that would be acceptable. Five would probably we better and if somebody wants a bigger dose they can take more than one. I think constraining the product types is important. There’s no reason for this to be in a brownie and in a cookie and in all these other palatable food products. :31

Vandry notes that cannabis containing edibles present a particular hazard to children and account for many ED visits in this population. At Johns Hopkins, I’m Elizabeth Tracey.
