The JAMA Summit Report on Reducing Firearm Violence and Harms is a comprehensive document that’s just been released on the proceedings of a multidisciplinary panel convened to consider firearm violence from many perspectives. Trauma surgeon Joseph Sakran at Johns Hopkins and one member of the panel, says clear takeaways emerged.
Sakran: Building safer communities, expanding research, modernizing technology in a responsible way and if you think about this it took decades to make cars safer or to reduce tobacco deaths so we can do the same with firearm injury. We have 5 key actions: focusing on communities and addressing the root causes. The second is being able to harness technology in a responsible way, the third is changing the narrative from fatalism to prevention, 4th is taking a whole of government and whole of society approach and the 5th is to spark a research revolution. :33
US citizens can support adoption of these goals by voting, Sakran says. At Johns Hopkins, I’m Elizabeth Tracey.
