What is the role of technology in reducing firearm violence? Elizabeth Tracey reports

In our current AI boom, it can seem as if technology will soon take over our lives. Yet Joseph Sakran, one member of a multidisciplinary panel that has just published The JAMA Summit Report on Reducing Firearm Violence and Harms and a trauma surgeon at Johns Hopkins, says technology is foundational to this public health approach to firearm safety.

Sakran: Technology can save lives if it's used responsibly. So from smart guns that prevent unauthorized use to large language models and AI systems that identify risks or support first responders innovation has to be guided in ethics, equity and privacy solutions. Going back to the car, how do you when you think about when we made cars safer, we did that without banning driving. And we can make firearms safer without necessarily banning firearm ownership. It's about responsible gun ownership.    :30

And responsible gun ownership also can integrate responsible use of AI to help, Sakran says. At Johns Hopkins, I’m Elizabeth Tracey.
