What causes hair loss in black women?

Did you know that almost half of black women experience some form of hair loss? Dermatologist Crystal Aguh [ah-GOO], Director of Johns Hopkins’ Ethnic Skin Program, says that certain types of hair loss are genetic, and there may not be much you can do. In other cases, hair shedding can be brought on by anemia, low levels of vitamin D, or an imbalance of thyroid hormones. If you’re losing your hair, a check-up with a dermatologist is a good idea.
Aguh says that stress and poor nutrition can cause hair loss, too. Eating a healthy diet and tending to your mental health can help your hair — and your whole being — look and feel better.
